The Ebro River starts in the Pyrenees, descends through Spain and spreads out into an expanse of wetlands, forming a delta that covers 135 square miles. For more than 13 million years, floods have brought sediment down into this delta.

As people cut down the forests during the Roman Empire, and then cleared fields for farms, more soil got washed down, building up the delta. 600 years ago, the river changed course, abandoning some sections of the delta, and waves began to eat away at those, forming slender arms, known as spits. 300 years ago, the river changed course again, leaving another spit, and several small lagoons.

Recently, people have built 147 dams upstream, cutting off the constant supply of sediment. The delta land has now begun to sink, even as the Mediterranean Sea rises, so a large fraction of the delta may be submerged by 2100.
