Jonathan Reeve Price, Satellite Remix: Lena River
Flowing 2700 miles, the Lena River is the 11th longest river in the world.
It goes northeast and then north from its source in the Baikal Mountains and empties into the Arctic Ocean.
At the mouth of the Lena River is a delta that is about 250 miles wide. In the winter, the delta is frozen tundra, but in the summer the alluvial fan becomes a lush wetland. Mammoths used to graze here; farmers sometimes discover their tusks.
When Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov was exiled in Siberia, near the river, he adapted its name as his own: Lenin.
