On October 12, 2005, the Ghaghat and Atrai Rivers were flooding dozens of villages in Bangladesh, spreading water across the low-lying fields in the delta. The land there is fertile and crowded, so when monsoon rains move in, islands are overwhelmed, swamps become lakes, and the soil gets washed out into the Bay of Bengal. You can see blue patches where the waters have risen within forests and farmland.

This image derives from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, known as MODIS, on NASA’s Terra satellite. False color makes cloud cover a fuzzy light blue, and turns plant life a rich green, while watery areas show up as light blue patches.

The analysis shows the many levels of pixels as you zoom into the landscape, marks important features, compares light treatments of the river delta, and marks key locations for deeper study. You can zoom into the depths of this image of green tragedy.

Looking closely at the original image, I keep trying to zoom in, to see the people escaping their fields, looking for high ground. But as I dig into the image, I find pixels, not people…digital information, not analog images, rivers that are made up of electrons, not water.
