The Nebula MI-67 surrounds the Wolf-Rayet star WR124 in the constellation Sagittarius.

At 15,000 light years from Earth, this energetic star is spinning off hot gases in clumps, shaped by the stellar wind. Each blob of gas in this nebula is about 100 billion miles across, with a mass about 30 times that of the Earth.

The original picture was taken with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in March 1997. But the original image is not what we might see, if we were rocketing through the area. The colors were added methodically to help us distinguish parts of the filaments and blobs of hot gas. The image itself is a composite made out of hundreds of smaller images, and each of those images consists of thousands of pixels. This is not a photograph, then, but an imaginative reconstruction.

I have broken apart the construct, zooming in, comparing what it looks like at each zoom level, from high to low. To explore the image with its own tools, I have drawn loose lines, inserted vectorized circles, added screen grabs in blocks. I have exposed the raw material of the original: pixels, and more pixels. The result is just an impression. Please let your attention glide in and out, diving through these vast amounts of space, enjoying the fire.

Process

We print on aluminum, then protect the surface with a matte lamination. We attach mounting hardware to the back, and add the artist's signature on a label identifying the picture, and giving its number in the edition.

We package the print in tissue paper and extra layers of cardboard. We ship via US Priority Mail, insured.
