The big ring road runs around the old customs boundaries. Then the crown, the circle that encompasses the suburbs, expands, and another ring road tries, and fails, to speed us around the "conglomeration." You can see how many villages have been swallowed up.

Each little town has its own C in a circle. That C stands for Commune, not Copyright, in the Michelin Atlas Routier. But their maps are copyright. So how do I justify appropriating them? I'd say that no one could mistake my image for a useful map.

Instead, it's a homage to the hard work of the map makers. Look at the delicacy of the lines, bending subtly, twisting to accommodate the highway's bends, showing where the gaps and traffic jams occur.

I've wiped out the color coding, to bring out these lines and blocks…a pattern that is difficult to spot in the original. I've added a picture of me trying to grasp the world, inside the Paris night sky. Interpretation, yes, and more: a salute to the cartographers' art.
