Jonathan Reeve Price, Camp Des Loges, 2018, Giclée print, 44" x 24.7" (111.7 x 62.7 cm)

In the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Yvelines, the Camp des Loges was opened in 1904 as a training ground for the French army. We like to think that the map corresponds to the facts on the ground.

The original is analog—a map printed on paper, echoing the actual landscape. But I scan this abstraction, blow it up, vectorize it, eliminate the bleak shades that Michelin uses to distinguish one area from another. Now it is electrons, not ink.

I study the original, struggling to distinguish one neighborhood from another. I use my finger to follow one avenue through its bumps and twists. I turn to software to bleach the color out of the original map, and then add back in bright primary shading. I pour, I drag, I follow the lines like a kid using crayons on a coloring book..

There's the river: I make it blue, like a child who knows that water should be blue, even though the Seine is brown, green, murky, and even when it shimmers it reflects the grey skies overhead.

Here are words, numbers, disintegrating as they expand. Where am I? What can I see down below?

I decide to show the original, and the tools I have used to disfigure it, as I analyze, and tear it apart. This is not cartography. It's a remix.
